On Wednesday, 19th July 2023, Grade V A students from NPS-NORTH organised a special assembly to celebrate International Chess Day.

This day serves as a reminder of the profound impact chess has had on individuals and society. It is celebrated globally through various events, tournaments, and gatherings that promote strategic thinking, critical analysis, and sportsmanship. Chess transcends age and background, providing an inclusive platform where young and old can engage in a friendly competition and mutual respect.
The class assembly featured news updates, keeping everyone informed about national, international, and sports events, an inspirational thought and a quiz based on the theme of chess. All students actively participated and responded with correct answers, showing their interest, awareness, and knowledge of the game. Terms like ‘castling’, ‘counterattack’, ‘stalemate’ were also introduced through quiz questions.
From the very origin of this interesting game to the current global online chess phenomenon, India has contributed significantly to the world of chess. Historical records show that chessboard dates from the days of Mahabharata and Ramayana.
Considering the rich Indian chess history and the timeline of chess, the International Chess Day serves as a poignant reminder of the game’s enduring legacy, its influence on human intellect, and its potential to unite and inspire individuals worldwide. This was the idea highlighted during the teacher talk section of the assembly.
As is customary, the assembly ended with the rendition of the national anthem.
